End of an era: Twilight

I was hearing a lot about Twilight. I saw the books displayed proudly in every single bookstore I went into. It looked like a load of hogwash. After a visit back to the first place I would call home in Taiwan, a small town called LinKou, I was walking to the bus stop and thought I would wonder into the local bookstore for something to read on the bus ride back to Taipei.

There were about three English books available, two of which I had read. The only one that remained was Twilight. I thought why not, as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about but more importantly I didn’t want to be on a bus sans reading material. The queue for the bus was outrageous, it was late and I was tired, so I decided to take a cab back to the city.

I got in the back, gave the cab driver my address and removed the cellophane wrapping from the book. I read the first few pages and did a mental WTF. By page 23 I was hooked. Even though I had work the next day, I stayed up until 4am. I would have read more, but my eyes had decided otherwise.

I woke up and all I could think about was Twilight. I went to work and during each break I would wonder how the plot would unfold. Even during my lunch break, when I would go and practice piano for half an hour each day, I still had Twilight on my mind.

After work and on the MRT (subway) on my way to my evening Chinese class, I loved the fact that a) I found a seat and b) that I could read my book. I was rather embarrassed about the cover, but after five minutes I was too engrossed in the story to care.

It took me two weeks to read all four books in the Twilight series. I made the mistake of only purchasing the first book and at 2am I had finished the book and did not have the sequel. This would not happen again! The next day during lunch, I went to the bookstore and bought the rest of the series. When I read the last page of the final book, I felt empty. Now what? My literary meth extravaganza was over. The come down was not fun.

I needed more. Enter the movie. I watched it and immediately afterwards downloaded the sheet music to learn that song that Edward plays for Bella. I got the soundtrack and till this day most of those songs are still in Most Played. Muse, a band I never even considered liking back in the day, became my favourite band of the moment. I was Twilight whipped.

From that point on, Fi and I made it a tradition that we would watch the movie on the big screen. We enjoyed the second one, watched the third one when we were waiting for our all night 5 star  bus trip to a beach town called Kenting. Eclipse is where Jacob and Edward decide to get shirtless so the movie was scattered with high pitch shrills from all of the teenage girls in the cinema. Fi was in Australia, so I went with another friend, Candice and that was a real hoot. She provides the best commentary.

For the final one Fi, my sibling and I headed off to the cinema and were surprised by the amount of children there. I mean some of those scenes are not kid friendly. We invited my sister's boyfriend but he thought the invite was a joke and declined. Edward would do it for Bella. My sister jokes that  Twilight had ruined relationships for her. I mean how can anyone be like Edward?

So my final thoughts can be summed up in this conversation with my dear sibling:

"I watched Zookeeper, it really made me laugh out loud."
" And you thought Twilight was lame…"

This song will be stuck in your head for the whole day.

Got Milk? Milking is the new craze.

The internet has reached a new low and by low I mean an awesome high. So last year it was planking. All the cool kids were doing it and now its pouring udder juice (milk) over your head and taking photos of yourself.  No I am not drunk and no I did not make that up. This is a real thing. And it has a name, it is called milking.

In case you didn't believe me

So how and more importantly why did all this start?

Of course this was started by some kids at uni.

Watch all the action here, this is why I love YouTube

Have a Happy WTF Wednesday. And you're welcome.

A cheap(skate) way of life

Since sites like Groupon have taken off, people are cottoning on to the idea that we don't have to pay full price for things. I love watching shows like Extreme Couponing and wish that we had something like this South Africa. I mean you can get a whole garage full of name brand soda for free. Sure you could never get through of all that in your lifetime, but the point is you didn't have to pay for it.  In some cases the couponer even gets cash back. Oh to live in a society like that....

Enter Checkers.

Checkers now have a smart phone coupon app. Yes, that is correct. We can now have Extreme Smartphone Couponing. Who needs files and files of coupons, all that cutting, all that hard work? Even going to a touchscreen and printing out coupons seems a schlep, now you just need to add a smartphone and the app. I can't wait to try this out and best of all it is not one of those apps that are only available for iPhones and Android...get this it is also available for Blackberry. Now that's what I call innovative.

Movie Monday: The Witches

A while ago my friend Kate and I decided that we wanted to watch The Witches. We were talking about how scary it was and how we hadn't seen it since we were kids. Kate went to her local video store (you know you're old when you call a DVD store a video store) and the guy didn't have it, but expressed his excitement and approval of us wanting to watch it. I also tried to find it, but alas nothing. I asked my buddy who has uncapped internet if I could download it, and that's how we got our copy.

Here is the trailer

Even as we sat on the couch, mouthes full of pop corn, we were a bit scared. Anjelica Houston, the Grand High Witch is scary! And who knew that Rowan Atkinson played the hotel manger. All in all it was awesome to see this movie again, and even though some of the special effects were super 1990, I have no idea how my parents let me watch this at age 6.

Watch the movie now read the book

Of course only Roald Dahl could come up with something like this.

Christmas Bucket List: The Turducken

So Christmas is around the corner and I know this because all of the decorations in shopping malls are up. (Well I actually knew this in October). Anywho for some reason I thought of Natanial and that lead me to the Turducken. So I thought it would be fun to put together a Christmas Bucket List. I have but one wish....

To eat the poultry trifecta

Even the sight of it makes me want to hurl, but I have to try this. I have always thought the idea of combining different kinds of animal flesh on one plate disgusting, the surf and turf being one such example, but I feel like I am missing out if I do not try this at least once.

Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should...

Nature's majestic beast...haha

Let me know if you have ever eaten this creation. I would lurve to know.

Call Me Maybe

I've had this song stuck in my head for days now. Thought this would be a cool business slash pick up line card.

PS: I made these numbers up. Apologies to the folks that actually own those numbers. Also what kind of a person would phone the above numbers? Shame on you :P

Look what I got

Look what arrived for me from my friends in Taiwan. We have kind of started a tradition, whereby we send all the birthday and Christmas gifts at once. It wasn't meant to be this way, it just kind of turned out that way due to our contestant procrastination. Me more so than them, right guys? I will be posting my gifts next week.

Beautifully wrapped and they used my favorite stationery ever. You guys know me too well.

How awesome are these panda clips? Can't wait to use them. Might even turn one into a hair clip....

This is the coolest card in the history of cards. I love sloths. I think I shall get this framed.

This was what my most talented friend Lauren made me. Not the stuffed animal, the bag. It is amazing and the attention to detail....wow! Thanks so much dude. I am currently using this bag and it makes me so happy every time I get something from inside it to see the amazing green lining.

ps: there was another awesome gift, but that shall be part of a new post because it is a DIY and I am still in the process of DIY'ing it.

For your Face: Mini Mince Pies

This weekend I went home to celebrate Christmas in November because my sister and her boyfriend shall be jet setting off to New Zealand for the holiday season (tough life). My momsi went all out and made us so many delicious treats, include these bite sized mince pies. Here's how you too can make them.

They are great as gifts or delicious with a mug of tea.

Friday Fun: Happy like a Hippo

I used to collect hippos as kid. Not actual real life ones, but ornaments. I had a large wooden one, a little clay one, plushy ones.....loads and loads of hippos. I wonder what happened to them? That big wooden hippo purchased in Zimbabwe would look awesome in my room.

Lead me not into temptation

You can actually purchase this diorama on Etsy. I just thought it was a cool picture.

Does my bum look big in this?

Happy like Hippo

This part of Along Came Polly makes me laugh so much.

A Happy Hippo for your Face

And finally the hiphopopottomus

Have a Happy Friday!

For Your Face: Zucchini Salad

Last night it was my turn to cook. I was working late and on the way home I forgot to stop at the shops. So when I got home I had to be creative and resourceful. I produced a rather amazing meal, if I don't say so myself, and even my sibling and roommate were impressed. You see I hardly ever cook on a regular basis, even though I love to cook. Here is one of the amazeballs dishes I came up with.

A wish list

Stuff that I would really like. Santa take note. And by Santa I mean my parents. Like I said when I was 8 years old "Mom, I know you are Father Christmas."

So obviously I appreciate any gifts, but these are on my wish list.

At number uno, we have that much coveted capybara brooch, that was also on my list last year. My life was made over the weekend, when I saw a real life capybara at the zoo.

Secondly, I would love any books. I have thought about getting a Kindle or E-Reader but I'm still old school that way. I love collecting books way too much.

Next up some fabric. For my birthday I received the most awesome sewing machine ever and I would love to make some things over my rather long (not complaining) vacation.

Finally, I love baking even though its often hit and miss. I would like to work on my cake decorating skills and I'm thinking a good place to start would be with a piping bag.

Read This: Karl Pilkington

On Sunday morning I did two of my favorite things. I went out for breakfast and visited one of my favorite book stores. I was checking out the bargain bin and stumbled across this gem, Happyslapped by a Jellyfish by Karl Pilkington. It was hard cover and was only R20.

Happyslapped by a Jellyfish

I have loved the ramblings of Mr Pilkington (head like a f#@$en orange) ever since An Idiot Abroad started. I then downloaded The Ricky Gervais Guide To podcast series and just can't get enough.

A little story about Karl's book

I only started reading this yesterday but I just want to get to the end. It is so good that I have actually stopped reading my vampire literary meth for a while. Sleep got the better of me last night, but I am hoping I can finish it today. Karl has an awesome view of the world that makes you laugh out loud, and this book details some of his travels.

Two quotes

Hey, hey, hey it's Friday! And that means that it is time to.....

For your Face: Make your own muesli

The other day at work, one of my colleagues was saying how she had made her own muesli and that it was super easy to do. So I made some myself. It is so easy to make, you know exactly what goes in it and best of all it more delicious than any store bought muesli.

Mix 500g oats and 200g desiccated coconut. Toast for 15 minutes.

Melt 1 cup maple syrup or honey, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp vanilla.
Bring to the boil and stir for 1 minute.

Add the syrup mixture to the toasted oats mixture.

Add in some dried fruit.

Line a tray with wax paper.

Add the mixture and flatten out. Put in the oven until toasted (about 30 minutes) at 180 C.

Remove from oven and allow to cool.

It goes great with milk or yogurt or just as is. Yum. Now feed your face.

Watch This: Hot Rod

I like watching the same movies over and over again. They are usually comedies and most probably feature Will Ferrel. This is one exception, and it stars Andy Samburg.

HOT ROD.

My favorite line from Hot Rod

Photobucket

My favorite scene from Hot Rod

The safe word is whiskey.

You should watch this if you haven't already. And if you have, watch it again. Have a happy day!

Quiz Night at Hooter's

So the first time I went to the fine establishment of Hooter's, it happened to be quiz night. Some of the questions were rather challenging, as is to be expected, but we still managed to come second. It was a proud moment.

The highlight of that evening would have to be when the group didn't know what answer one team member was referring to and because I was the scribe he was dictating the spelling to me. "n-i-g-g-e-r". I looked at him in disbelief. I asked him to spell it again. "n-i-g-g-e-r" Yup, that is what he had said. "I'm not writing that! You write it." So he wrote it, and just as he saw it on paper he realized what he had written. He had meant "Niger", the African country. Ha ha. That moment reminds me so much of this South Park.

So we decided to try our hand at another Quiz Night and it was just not the same. Fun but for different reasons. I have compiled a list to explain why.

1. The usual quiz master was sick with food poisoning, so they sent his replacement who was more interested in handing out shots and asking people to "give me a cigarette".

2. The new quiz master would ask the audience if the questions were too difficult and change them. An example being What is a ploughman's lunch? Really?

3. Googling is not allowed. I saw a team Googling incessantly and was so going to bust them. That was until I saw what answers they had produced when we swopped sheets to mark them. Google away. Also their team name was Drunk Idiots and it kind of became a self fulfilling prophecy. My favorite was the spelling of The Hobbit as Hobbet.

4. When swopping sheets, the Drunk Idiots asked "How do you guys know so much stuffs?"

5. We came third. Apparently the team that are there every week won.

Next time we are going to try The Keg. Apparently it attracts a more older crowd. :P

Halloween Roundup

When I used to teach, Halloween was an important event in my life. The kids would dress up, the teachers had to dress up and there would be some activity (usually a fashion show) and of course trick or treating. Now, not so much.

I got home late from work and decided it was time to read my literary meth. Two years ago I discovered the Twilight novels, last year Vampire Academy and this year The House of Night. I think it's become a tradition. I will take about two weeks to get through the series, where I sleep for about two hours a night while still functioning at work just so that I can find out what happens. The end result is always the same, when I have no more books to read I feel a gaping hole.

I should get a Kindle so that I won't have to hide the cover when I read these books in public.
After some intellectual reading I saw that The Devil's Advocate was on. I have never watched this and thought that then would be a good time to do so. It kept me interested until the rather infernal ending.

Kevin Lomax: What are you?
John Milton: Oh, I have so many names...
Kevin Lomax: Satan.
John Milton: Call me Dad.

And finally: so a friend said that while he was driving through a rather wealthy neighborhood in Johannesburg, he saw all the domestic workers out at the front gates dressed up as witches with buckets of candy. The kids were wandering from gate to gate trick or treating. I wonder what the parentals were up to? Only in South Africa!
