For Your Face: Chicken in Coke (recipe)

An easy to make delicious meal! I wonder if you used Coke Zero if it would taste the same? Fun Fact: I managed to cook my own hand on the grill while placing this delicious meal in the oven. Always wear oven gloves kids. And that is all.

Friends & Food

Dinner and a Movie

My weekend started on Thursday. I say this because I hardly ever go out on a "school night". My friend invited me to a movie screening, Hope Springs, and we decided to have some dinner beforehand. We were going to take the healthy fish and salad route, so that we could stuff our faces with pop corn guilt free, but we saw Yume, a sushi and noodle place, and just had to go in.

First up the tempura prawns. I don't really remember ever having tried one, but these were delicious. The prawns arrived stacked up with a delicious wasabi mayonnaise. There were only three per plate, so we had to get another just so that we each ate the same amount. Next up was the dim sum. Spinach and cream cheese is my favorite. And then we just had to try the sushi, salmon all the way baby.

Movie time! I felt like a pseudo celeb, we didn't have to pay for anything, got our names ticked off a list (I was the plus one) and got popcorn and a soda. They had laid out all of the possible popcorn flavorings and my friend joked that depending on the flavor you chose, can say a lot about you. I am a salt & vinegar kind of gal. Make of that what you will. Hope Springs stars Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones and focuses on the elderly couple trying to spice up their marriage. A really sweet movie but one that you should never ever watch with your parents for fear of catching them giving each other a knowing glance at one of the scenes in the movie. You have been warned.

Dinner and some Trivia

It was officially the weekend and time for a spot of trivia in the form a quiz night. I love quizzes. I have only attended one prior to this one, but it was kind of a big deal, because it was at Hooter's and we came second. Our team name was the only one that made no reference to breasts. This quiz night was so much fun because it mixed the old and new. The theme was audio and visual and definitely made you put your thinking cap on  (or dunce cap depending on the individual).

We were a mixed aged crowd and when the first question "In what year did the iPhone first come out?" was asked, all eyes were on us. You think we would know it but we didn't. We were wrong by one year, but on quiz night, that is not good enough. We got some anagrams, flags and logos which were easy enough, although I have come to accept that I suck at anagrams. We also got close ups of objects, which we then had to guess. Not as easy as it sounds.

The best part was guessing artists, song titles and lyrics. My friend, who listens to metal, knew the answers for Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber songs. We also got served some amazing food and delicious cake. In the end we came fourth, which wasn't all bad as we still got a prize. We were each the proud new owners of a slab of Cadbury Bubble.

Dinner and a Sleepover

On Saturday I was invited to my BFF's house for a home cooked meal. Yum! She makes the best food. She was making chicken in coke, which is a specialty at her house, and even though I have known her and her family for almost my entire life, I only tried this dish about a year ago. (I made this dish and will post the recipe tomorrow). It was great to catch up, laugh and just hang out. It is awesome to have friends who you can just chill with without having to have any activities planned.
We thought about renting a movie, but both admitted we would just probably fall asleep. Early to bed. Ha ha.

Dinner and a Goodbye

After a few weeks of cancellations, I was going to teach my Chinese friend some English. She had sent me a message saying that she was going back to China, and I thought this was just her annual trip back home. When I arrived on Sunday, she broke the news. A few weeks ago her boss had told everyone at the South African subsidiary company that they were to go back to China. A lot of her friends were visiting and she invited me out for a farewell dinner.

I was at the table with my friend and expats. In Chinese culture you often sit at a round table with a lazy susan in the centre. Meals are all about being very social and sharing. Contrary to Western norms, you order numerous dishes that you will all share. Everyone is given a bowl, spoon and chopsticks. One person placed the order and the Laoban (boss) insisted that our ten plates of food would not be enough. So we ordered more. The food never stopped coming! Eventually someone had to ask if the was the last dish because we already had three dishes on the table that had remained untouched.

My chopstick skills are not at wizard level, but I can eat fish, noodles and rice pretty well. One diner jokingly asked if I could use chopsticks, and I could confidently say yes. I too have laughed at newbies to the chopstick scene who try and navigate a bowl of soup or rice. There are definitely things I miss about Taiwan, the food being one of these things. A friend joked that one of the food groups in Taiwan was congealed, and when I first arrived I hated this. But now I miss it. Luckily I was treated to some Suan La Tang (sour spicy soup) and yes it was congealed. Yum!

It was great to meet all of my student's friends. I know all about this type of expat camaraderie, as that was four years of my life. Saying goodbye was sad, because you know that although you will chat on Skype and keep in contact, you probably won't see them again.

Cool Stuff: vampires, pinantas & more

The anatomy of a Piñata: from the Carmichael Collective. I really want to smack a piñata up. One of my favorite jokes by one of my favorite comedians, Demitri Martin goes a little something like this "I didn't know it was a donkey! I just thought it was a piñata with a little pizazz."

No good deed goes unpunished....

As I was walking out of my house to go to work looking like a pack ox with my laptop, handbag and gym bag in hand, I noticed a blue soccer mom style car stranded in the parking lot, bonnet open with jumper cables attached to nothing but said car. I'm no mechanic, but I am pretty sure you need to attach those cables to something.

I have been in this situation before: dead battery and stranded. You feel like a complete idiot yet you desperately want help. I could empathize with this lady and before I could offer my good Samaritan services, she yelled "Get your car. I need someone to help me". Taken aback by this brashness, I replied that I was on my way to my car and would bring it over.

I drove my car to where the car was stranded but before I could park next it, the soccer mom was waving her hands in the air directing me. I pulled up next to her and she looked at me as if to say "Well, what are you waiting for?" I remained seated and she eventually opened my bonnet and tried to connect the jumper cables. "It's too far! You need to move your car closer." At this stage Junior appeared and decided to locate himself between the two cars. I carefully backed out and pulled in closer while trying to avoid crushing Junior.

Soccer Mom connected the jumper cables, but not before Junior offered his services at least five times. "Let me try Mom. I can do it Mom. I'm strong Mom." She then stormed off, got into her car and started it. I sat there speechless. "What are you waiting for?" she mouthed through the window. I started my car and nothing. Her battery was flat.

At this moment, another complex dweller was heading on his way to work. He came over and offered some help. He told me to keep my car at above 4 revs, and so we tried again. Nothing. The kind man then told Soccer Mom that we could swop the batteries and that he would get his tools. "You tell her!" yelled Soccer Mom in a non discreet whisper. "Uh, no" replied Kind Man quietly. Kind Man went off to fetch his tools.

By this stage I was sure I was going to be late for work. Soccer Mom stormed on over and asked "Are you going to be late for work?" "Yes", I replied to which she replied "Well I'm also late. I was supposed to drop him off at school at 7.30 and be at work at 8.00. So you're not the only one. We also need to swop batteries." I sat there flabbergasted.

The look on my face must have said it all. Soccer Mom went back to her vehicle and tried again. The car started just as Kind Man was reversing in with his tools. "It's all sorted" she yelled. She left the car running and walked over to my bonnet to remove the cables. She then went back to her car, leaving my bonnet open. I just sat there. It finally occurred to her that she should at the very least thank me and maybe even close my bonnet. "Thanks so much!" she muttered as she went to close my bonnet. "No problem!" I replied as I drove off to go to work.

For Your Face: RiceKrispie Treats (recipe)

So on Sunday I was feeling rather domesticated and decided to whip up some tasty treats. I really wanted to make chocolate chilli fudge, but none of my friends like fudge. One friend suggested I made Rice Krispie Treats like "we had when we were kids". That is exactly what I did.

Step 1: melt the marshmallows and some butter over a low heat

Step 2: Remove from heat and mix in some Rice Krispies (puffed rice cereal)

Step 3: keep on mixing until all the marshmallow goodness has been absorbed

Step 4: line a baking tray with wax paper

Step 5: add the mixture and flatten with a metal spoon

Step 6: place in the fridge for about an hour

Step 7: remove from the baking tray and cut into squares

Feed your face and enjoy!

In the city: fun, fun, fun

I have only ever won two things, a coffee table book featuring concept cars and a Britney Spears CD. When I heard that one of my favorite bands of all time, Bloc Party, was coming to South Africa, I almost couldn't believe it. When I found out they were playing at Rocking the Daisies, and then that none of my friends wanted to go, I was super sad. Enter In the City.

Bloc Party would be playing in Joburg. All I needed to do was round up some of my friends and go. Problem, none of my friends wanted to cough up almost R300 to see a band that they didn't really know. Plan B: win tickets. I entered all of the competitions that were giving away tickets and to my surprise I won. At first I thought I had only won two tickets, but I had won four. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Not even the fact that a few hours later I was a victim of fraud and had all of my money stolen could dampen my spirits. I was going to see Bloc Party in the flesh, and guess who would also be there, Die Antwoord

We arrived at the venue and I had to pay R50 for parking, and even though I tried to reason with the car guard that on the web it said R20, he wasn't having any of it. We entered the venue and decided we needed a drink.

Oh how I had forgotten the bonding experiences and camaraderie of standing in the queue to get a drink. We were there for over an hour and got to see and hear some awesome drunk kid antics. One individual even had the audacity to warn others about her broken foot, the crowd was having none of this, and asked why she would even be in such a queue with said foot. Ha ha.

When we got to the front we realized why there was such a hold up, all glasses and cans had to be decanted into plastic cups. A fellow queuer offered to decant one of my beers (we were taking no chances, all of our drinks would be bought then and there) and managed to create that awesome layer of foam so common to non seasoned beer pourers. Still it tasted, as Die Antwoord would later sing, like an angel peed on my tongue.

Music time. Say what you will about Die Antwoord, they sure can put on a show. I have never heard so many swear words in one set, my favorite being "poes koel". And Yolandi Visser's signature squeal, really does sound like a whale if you think about it. All in all I was super entertained.

die antwoord at in the city joburg
"Oh look it's a baby" (as ghost was inflating) "Oh wait, that's not a baby!" (once the entire ghost was inflated).
Next up was Bloc Party, and they did indeed rock the party. I luffed all of their tunes, but was super sad when they didnt play signs. Sure it was one of their biggest hits, but I like it muchly.

Panoramic shot of Bloc Party. Such an awesome pic.

Friday Fun: Mandoza’s Nkalakatha

I come from a small town where lets just say some people are not as progressive as others. One night we were at the local high school's braai evening. There was quite a good turn out but what made it odd was that there were about 20 tables of white folk and one central table of black folk. Only in this town.

After the braai, the DJ fired up his tunes and we got to listen to Steve Hofmeyer, Dozi, Kaptein and more of the usual treffers. Some of the white tables were dancing and then when the tell tale starting beats of Nkalakatha filled the air, everyone, black and white, hit the dance floor. There is just something about that song.

Here is the 2012 Remake with some Afrikaans lyrics

And as always Nandos nails it....

Fun fact: this song is 12 years old.

Reading List: 3 books you should read now

I'm the kind of person that will be reading five books at once. I love reading and am a compulsive book collector. A good day for me is when I spend hours in a bookstore. It is one of my happy places.

Spud 4 Exit: Pursued by a Bear

The final book in the Spud series promises to be just as good as the rest. I am only about a quarter of the way through it though because my Mom came to visit, started to read it and then took it back home with her where Rex, the family dog decided to eat the cover. The book was then returned to me and I haven't had the heart to start reading it again with said mauled cover. But I think everyone should read it.
When I found out that there was a Spud 4 I walked into my favorite book store and excitedly (read loudly) asked "I wonder if they have the new Spud book?" As soon as the words left my mouth I was stared in the face by 100 copies of Spud 4, as well as three assistants who were showing me where the books were. Yes they had the new Spud book.

Louis Theroux: Weird Weekends

I first watched the series about a year ago and was immediately hooked. I like watching weird stuff that is just so normal to some. Case in point being National Geographic's Taboo. I found the book at my favorite bookstore and just had to get it. Theroux is a journo and his writing is excellent, I felt like I was watching one of his documentaries. I am only half way through because I am easily distracted, but when I start reading this it is definite page turner.

Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade

One of the first things I do when I go into someone's house is check out their bookshelf. If they don't have one, I see this as a warning sign. Last weekend I was housesitting with a friend at a house that has an amazing library. An entire wall of their living room is covered with books. I was in my element. Being a Sunday I decided to go for something light hearted and found this gem, Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade by Guy Browning.

I took it outside with me and sat by the pool. Hilarity ensued. I thought it would be more of a practical book but it was just humorous. He provides answers to questions such as What are the consequences of hitting a jellyfish with a spade? Should you cross your bridge when someone else is burning it? In a monogamous relationship is it morally acceptable to tuck your side of the duvet in? And to answer the question in the title, well you just need to read the book*. That just happened.

*Why would you want to hit a jellyfish you freak? But seriously, it's because you run the risk of splattering some of those microscopic stinging tentacles on yourself. The neurotoxin in the stingers (and the stingers themselves) remain toxic for a very long time after the jellyfish dies.

WTF Wednesday: Big in Japan

I really want to go to Japan. Of course I want to do all the tourist things like go to Mount Fuji, but I really want to go and experience the underbelly of Japan. Here are some of the reasons why.

Bagel Heads...seriously wtf?

This is taken from National Geographic's Taboo. Words fail me, I don't understand this at all.

Need a place to stay?

Look no further than Pod Hotels, which as the name suggests are little pods that you get to stay in. The only drawback is that the bathrooms are communal.

The food

And then there is cosplay...

Trend Spotter: Celebrities Puking on Stage

Yes it's a real thing and all the hottest singers are doing it. Well so far only The Biebster and Lady Gaga, but it will catch on. I'm calling it. Thanks to YouTube for the ability to be able to watch such things. We live in that kind of world now.

For Your Face: Waffles (recipe)

So last week my kind roommate and her boyfriend were whipping up some waffles and they offered me one of these delicious treats. Nothing beats a waffle with some vanilla ice cream and syrup.

I have become kind of obsessed with this tasty treat of late, on the road trip back from Louis Trichardt we stopped at a Wimpy and got our waffle on. I had the bar one waffle, which is as the name suggests, a delicious waffle with melted bar one as well as little bite sizes pieces of bar one. Heaven in your mouth, or as Die Antwoord likes to say "Like an angel has peed in your mouth".

Here is a waffle recipe so that you can feed your face.

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1¾ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup vegtable oil
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract (optional)

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

  2. Beat eggs thoroughly. Whisk in sugar, milk and oil.

  3. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients and mix gently until combined. Don't overmix!

  4. Spray both surfaces of your waffle iron with cooking spray.
Cook them until golden brown and top with as much ice cream and syrup as your face can take.

Friday Fun: 10 bets you can't lose

So yesterday was one of those days where all of my money bar R50 was withdrawn from my account. Basically I was a victim of a fraud. I had to go to the bank to get a new card and when I left I realized I had no money for parking. I had to go back into the bank and beg them to allow me to draw at least R20 so that I could pay for parking. They let me. It also got me thinking as to how I would make cash if they hadn't let me withdraw the money. Enter plan B.

10 Bets You Can't Lose

Good to remember for anytime you are short of cash and need to make  quick buck. Have a happy weekend!

Epic Fail: How not to make Cake Pops

I saw a cake pop for the first time when I was in Starbucks in Taiwan. I never bought one but everyday when I bought my iced coffee, I thought about it. Besides wanting to feed my face with such a delight, I wondered how they made it. Jump forward a few months and look what my awesome sibling got me for my birthday, my very own cake pop maker. It says that it is for ages 8 and up, but I think they are lying. My sibling, her boyfriend and my roommate did not sugar coat the outcome. They laughed, a lot.

But it wasn't all bad. I managed to make some delicious chocolate mint cupcakes covered in chocolate.

WTF Wednesday: Crocs

Remember when these bad boys first graced the feet of "cool" people everywhere?

"They are so comfy" they said. "Look, I can get a pair in every color" they said. I wasn't convinced. Especially when I was at my local GP for a check up and while he was delivering the results, I saw a pair of white crocs peek out from under the table. When I find something funny I have zero finesse. I had to use all of my will power to not crack up laughing.

I am sad to admit that I too fell for this fashion faux pa. But before you judge, I got them for two reasons. One because I was told they are the comfiest shoes ever and I get blisters really easily, and two because I like pumps. I got these bad boys but only wore them twice because they gave me blisters.

Adam Sandler gets it!

And finally.....

A movie you should like totally watch: America Pie Reunion

I remember when I was 16 America Pie came out. My BFF and I went off to the cinema to watch it. There was a catch, her mom came with us. We were hiding our embarrassment throughout the movie while luckily my BFF's mom found it hilarious and laughed throughout. There have been several more American Pies since then and I didn't have high hopes for American Pie: Reunion. I was wrong.

It features all of the original cast members and even the MILF guys make an appearance. I thought I would be over the pie humor by now, but nu uh I laughed throughout the movie. There are so many funny moments.

Here is one of them...

Steve Stifler: "I love the Twilight books. New Moon is my favorite!"
Teen Girl: "Mine too!"
Steve Stifler: "Oh my god, it's like, we have so much in common!"
