NeighbourGoods Market

My friend invited me to try out the Neighbourgoods market. I was super excited because I had heard only good things. I met up with my buddy at her house and we left for our destination. I had my sister's GPS in my car and asked if I should bring that. My buddy had a map book and had been there before. Twenty minutes later we knew we were close but just couldn't find it! After deciding to just go where the bonnet takes us, we got there. We also managed to find parking straight away and my buddy nailed parallel parking.

It's on Juta Street in town. You can't miss it, seriously.

Our prime parking spot. No selling balls under an umbrella here!

The most delicious iced coffee ever! Next time I want to try the peanut butter one.

I lurve marshmellows. The Turkish Delight ones are my favorite.

This was our lunch. These burgers are amazing!

Olympics: Nailed It

So the Olympics are here and already we have an error.....

North Koreans furious over flag mix up: read more here

Here's what happened: the organizers put up the South Korean flag instead of the North Korean flag. No biggie? North Korea and South Korea are not friends. The border between the two countries is one of the most militarized borders in the world. North Korea also has one of the largest militaries in the world.

Also why is North Korea allowed in the Olympics? Their Great Leader has a taste for cognac and cigars yet North Koreans are one of the most malnourished people in the world and are actually two inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts.

For Your Face: Rosemary & Sweet Potato Soup (recipe)

So back at home we have an awesome restaurant that makes the best soup ever. Seriously people buy the soup by the liter and stock up during winter. The last time I ventured back home we went there for lunch and they served up some rosemary and sweet potato soup. It was so delicious that I had to try my own version. Here is my recipe. Enjoy!

Because Every Country is Good at Something

Number 1

Check out this awesome info graphic, made by Information is Beautiful, showcasing what each country is numero uno at. You can view the full info graphic here.

Some of my favorite findings included Japan producing the most robots (the sheer volume of Japanese movies that have featured a robot in the story line is testament to this), The Philippines being numero uno at texting, Costa Rica being the happiest country (must be the all the nature), The USA has the most serial killers and Argentina produces/consumes the most horse meat.

I just know these fun facts will come up in a game of Trivial Pursuit and when they do, I will be ready.

How Popular is your Birthday?

We all have one but do you know how popular your birth date is? The lighter the color the more special you are because that means fewer people were born on that day. My birthday, September 20th is super common. And here I thought I was special.... :P

Snap Happy

With hipsters walking around with cameras strung around their necks, to those with smartphones uploading anything and everything to Instagram and those Facebook peeps who upload what they eat at every meal (you know who you are), I thought it would be fitting to do a post on photos.

According to Urban Dictionary, snap happy can be defined as....

Many people use Instagram and more importantly hashtags. If you have an Android or iPhone you can have access to some awesome and not so awesome pictures. Blackberry users...sorry for you!

You can even get your instagram pictures printed with Prinstagram. I can't wait until I have added a lot of guinea pictures and when my collection is complete I shall definitely get some printed.

Good to Eat At: Chinese Food in Cyrildine

So for a while my buddy Kate had been telling me about a place that had an authentic Chinese experience, that she was excited to take me to. And she was right!

We went to Cyrildene. There are some awesome Chinese supermarkets, vegetable stalls, temples and some rather suspicious looking massage parlors. We went to the supermarkets and bought some stuff. I had to get some of these panda cookies, they are so delicious. And why yes that is mayonnaise in a bag.

Best of all Cyrildene has some of the best Chinese restaurants around. As Kate said "Delicious food complete with plastic tablecloths and grimy floors". The restaurant that Kate usually goes to was closed, so we tried a random one and struck gold. I have been dying for some Kung Pao chicken but have not seen it on any menus. I just asked and what do you know, they said they would make it. We also ordered sweet and sour prawn and wow was that tasty. I got to practice some of my Chinese and when Kate had a "Where is the bathroom?" "It's finished" moment, I stepped in, used some Chinese 101 and her bladder was saved.

So the next time you are in the mood for some Chinese food head on over to Cyrildene. 好吃!

Turn Art into Toys

Kids draw the most awesome things. I remember when we were little my sibling drew a lion that had taken her the entire day to complete and when she proudly showed my parents, they responded with "Oh! What a beautiful dog!" Well now you can treasure these childhood moments and get your drawings made into a cute toy (plushy).

Best of all the folks at Child's Own Studio are so good that even if your kid draws something strange, it will turn into an awesome plushy. Check out the talented artist Wendy Tsao who turns kids' drawings into one-of-a-kind stuffed animals.

I really want to submit The Laminator and of course my Sk8er G8er.

Awesome Animal: The Chinchilla

I first became obsessed with this animal in my first year at varsity. My friend and I were cruising the malls and decided to check out the pet shop. We saw this strange mouse like creature that was R6000. We wanted to see it but it was sleeping. When we asked the manager if he could wake it up so that we could hold it, he looked at us like we were crazy animal abusers and said "NO!"

Fact 1: Chinchillas are nocturnal.

Fact 2: They bath in dust. Dust? Yes? No? Anyone?

They do not bathe in water, but dust instead. They will flip, roll, dig and play merrily in their quest to be clean.

Fact 3: A baby chinchilla is called a kit

This cute picture was taken from an awesome website called Baby Animalz and you should check it out.

Fact 4: They have extremely soft fur

The other day I was pet shop visiting (my sister calls me a pet shop groupie) and I asked if I could hold a chinchilla. They are the softest animals ever. A chinchilla has 90 hairs per follicle, whereas a human has 1 or 2.  My mom is really worried I will buy more animals to add to my menagerie but sadly I started sneezing when I held the fur ball (even though they have no dander, which is the leading cause of pet related allergies) and they are R2000 a pop. They are also used to make fur coats. Argh! Not cool.

Fact 5: They are immortal...well almost.

These South American animals live to be about 20 years old. That is like having a child.

The collective noun for chinchillas is: colony.
