Funny Friday: Between Two Ferns

I remember when I first told my friends Dan and Lauren about this show, they thought I was saying "Between Two Phones". You see we were at the International Flora Expo and we were amongst ferns. My South African accent must have been too much for their American ears. I was talking about "Between Two Ferns" and you should watch it.

Game of Thrones

So this post is dedicated to a friend, they know who they are, who tried to convince me to watch Game of Thrones but which I shot down every time. I am now addicted and owe the aforementioned person an apology. In my face.

The Oatmeal: I tried to watch Game of Thrones and this is what happened

Check out The Oatmeal's awesome comic about Game of Thrones.

Which leads me to my second point. Game of Thrones is one of the most downloaded (read pirated) series ever. A popular show but not so popular on TV if you know what I mean. You can read the article here.

Infographic: A guide to the houses

Check out Geeky Tyrant for a better view and a map. Pretty cool.

Lego: now you can play Game of Thrones

And what would Game of Thrones be without that theme song...

Why don't you draw something?

I am still living in the world of Blackberry. I have always wanted an iPhone but then my friend got a Samsung Galaxy and I realized that is the phone I want. While I do so love my Blackberry, it just doesn't have all of the cool apps that are on offer to those who own iPhones and Android phones. The day they released Instagram for Android was the day I realized this. But fret not, I have an iPod Touch and realized I could have all of the apps but just not the phone capabilities. Sort of win-win-lose.

That gets me to my point (finally), you should Draw Something. This a very addictive and fun app that gives you a word and then you need to draw that word for your friends. They guess the word and then the fun starts all over again.

Draw Something Fails

Can you guess this word? Ha ha too classic.

Draw Something Fails is an awesome site where you can see all of the latest and greatest Draw Something fails. This one above has to be my favorite.

What kind of Draw Something drawer are you?

Where do you fit in? Love this. Taken from Draw-Something.com, the unofficial Draw Something site.

Informative: introducing the info graphic

I am a fan of an infographic. Before indulging meant buying expensive design magazines but now Pinterest lets me indulge in this obsession even more. Here are some of my favorites. Pretty and educational.

Whenever you feel your ego getting too big, remember this.

I love Meat

Dominic Episcopo is one of Philadelphia’s most reputable photographers. This is from his collection, Meat America. Awesome or creepy?

I love watching Parks & Recreation, this is one of those shows that I can watch over and over again. One of my favorite characters has to be Ron Swanson. He just loves meat, as is illustrated in the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness. The very clever, Alex Leo, has put all of the Swanson meat quotes on pictures. You can check them out here

WTF Wednesday

Check out this awesome Tic Tac Toast from McPhee. How fun would your toast eating experience be if you could turn it into a game of naughts and crosses? On another note check out their site for all things bacon related, from bacon toothpaste to bacon mints. They have it all.

What time is it? It's toast time. This clock makes every hour of your day toast time. I really like the corny sayings, my favorite being 10.00's "Let's Jam!" You can get one of these from ToastThis on etsy

Winter Warmer: Twilight Soup

I first discovered an excellent tomato soup recipe when I was a vegetarian, but the recipe called for lentils. I have since perfected this recipe and even those who don't usually like tomato soup, like this one. It is vegan friendly and low in calories and more importantly delicious. Enjoy!

Be Car Wise

So the other day I got into my car, switched on the ignition and nothing! I had left the lights on. Now usually it will beep, but obviously the little machine that tells it to beep had broken. After calling many a friend and asking a few people, I realized two things. One - I had no idea how to deal with car trouble and two - I needed to buy jumper cables.

Here is an informative video showing you how to use jumper cables.

Also a rather good thing to know is that most car insurance companies will send someone out.

While we are on the topic, here is how you change a tire.

Watch these once and the knowledge you gain will last a life time. :)

Decadent Popcorn

I discovered this lovely recipe on The Pinterest machine and thought how easy it would be to make. This originally comes from Amy from She Wears Many Hats. So over the weekend I popped some popcorn, melted two slabs of white chocolate and mixed the two. I then added some sprinkles and placed the popcorn on some wax paper to set. It is that easy and best of all you can store it in a container so you can have a sweet tasty snack whenever you feel like it. Yum.

It's Cool: cool stuff

Peter Callesen is an amazing artist, I mean look at what he can do with a single piece of paper. To see more visit his website here

Sharpies are amazing. I have a black one and am looking to add to my collection, but they seem hard to come by in South Africa. Anyway, how cool is the decor in The Ace Hotel. And yup all the art is done with a Sharpie. It's done by the very talented Timothy Goodman and you can read more about him here.

How cool is this? Kevin Van Aelst is a food artist and does some amazing stuff with food. Check out  more of his incredible artwork here

Oyster & Wine Festival

On Sunday we went to Joburg's Biggest Oyster Festival at Brightwater Commons. I had only tried an oyster once before, and that was when I was still a vegetarian and they were handing them out for free at Kofi Bay, and I thought when in Rome. We actually kind of forgot about the oysters, it was only near the end of our day that we realized we hadn't yet feasted on one. We paid our R10 and got one each. People in front of us were getting oysters by the dozen. I threw on as much as was available, from ginger, to soy, lemon juice and pepper. I got the big nasty one, and sure it tasted just like the concoction I had thrown over it, but ugh it was disgusting! I feel uncouth, and don't cast pearls before swine type thing, but at least I had one.

The rest of the festival was amazing. The food stalls were awesome. The cupcakes were so tasty and a nice lady even gave me one for free. Thank you that chocolate orange cup cake was the best cup cake ever. I loved how all of the stalls had tasters. I went rather piggy at the turkish delight stall - they had so many different flavours. I also tried chickpea fudge, it sounds disgusting but I can't wait to try and make it at home. The pomegranate dressing was out of this world and the beetroot hummus has been my staple for lunch this week.

There was also lots of vino and for R25 you could get pretty sozzled. All in all an awesome day out and the weather was amazing. I look forward to next year!

Good to Eat at: So Yum

Every once in a while my good friend Kate and I meet up for a spot of dinner at So Yum in Hyde Park. Having lived in Taiwan for some time, I am a huge fan of Asian cuisine. I have even taken to eating my evening meals out of bowl, much to the annoyance of my sibling.

Everything on the menu at So Yum is as the name indicates, delicious! I have been here quite a few times and have never been disappointed. This time we decided to live large and ordered a glass of the Springfield Life from Stone Sauvignon Blanc. At R65 a glass it is not cheap, but wow it was so worth it. Due to allergies I have a limited sense of smell, but when our waitress poured this liquid gold into my glass I could smell it perfectly. You get some amazing scents on the nose and when you drink it, it tastes like heaven.

We started with some dim sum and probably should have stopped there, but the food is just too good! We then had some Thai Curry and Cashewnut Chicken with rice and noodles. The food was so good that we went glutton. About an hour afterwards I was still full. Asian food is deceiving like that, it looks like it won't full you up, but it really does!

For a great evening out with some delicious food that you can share with friends, check out So Yum

Rugby: Sharks vs Lions

sharks vs lions by m.burke
 Lions vs Sharks at Ellispark
So I have never been one to watch sport. I will usually join in when there is a world cup on or if I am staying with someone who is into sport. For example back in the day when I lived at home I knew that for the month of July I would only be watching The Tour de France. You kind of get into it because you have to.

I have always wanted to go to a live sporting match of somesort, especially cricket, but this is probably because I have visions of sipping on G&T's while lying on the lawns. Well last week my sibling invited me along to a rugby match. It was awesome! The vibe is amazing and I really liked the Lions' Mascot. Apparently he can do one armed push ups but sadly I never saw him do more than wave.

The game itself was awesome to watch, even though the Sharkies lost. In rugby you really need to know how to take a knock. The crowd added to the ambience, especially when Lion and Shark supporters were seated near each other. I was one of those irritating people at games who ask questions every time someone moves, because prior to this game, I knew nothing about rugby! I know a bit now and after watching a game, I'm actually kind of interested in it.

Thanks muchly to M.Burke for letting me use this super cool picture.

Sunday Sibling Outing with Friends: Honeydew Lifestyle Center

On Sunday we met up with friends and family at The Honeydew Lifestyle Center. It is awesome! They have a food market and you can sample and buy some rather interesting things. I ended up buying some Gojiberry pesto which I am super excited to throw over some pasta and we also had some fudge! When last? I felt like a kid again.

My BFF and I went to have a look at the plant section and we stumbled across some cute animals to place in your garden. We had to leave the section immediately when I spotted a cobra friend for the garden. We then headed to the decor side of the center and upon seeing all of the lovely things, my BFF remarked "I want lots of money!" We spent quite a lot of time in the toy store, and I really wanted the Ranga.

We headed to Primi Piatti for some breakfast and I got served the biggest omelette I have seen in my life. It was the length of my arm! After a delicious breakfast we headed to the plastic shop and this is where I found these cute pig and panda dustbin friends.

I would definitely recommend a bit of a Sunday morning outing to the Lifestyle Center.
